Maintaining Your G.H.BASS Footwear In Winter

It’s no secret that nothing lasts forever, however, proper care can greatly extend the life of your footwear.

Whether you’re exploring the city, taking the office by storm, or merely enjoying life, your footwear is meant to take you through every step of the way. That said, even our daily companions need a little TLC now and then.

As winter wafts in, the streets get wetter and muddier, so you want to ensure that you are doing everything you can to keep your footwear performing at its best.

In this blog, we offer a simple guide on how best to care for your loafers this season.

1. Clean After Each Use

While this tip might seem obvious, many people often don’t immediately clean their footwear, but instead, allow it to stand overnight in mud or debris.

This can allow odours to surface, bacteria to grow, and create stains that are difficult to remove. Furthermore, if mud is allowed to harden on the shoe, it can potentially compromise the structural integrity, leading to cracks in the material, especially with suede and leather.

It is best practice to always remove dust or sand with a soft brush, followed by gentle wipes with a clean, damp cloth to remove the remainder debris. But, pay attention to specific materials, because while wiping is recommended for leather, it’s best to gently blot on suede.

Finally, a quick wipe down of your inner soles after each use may assist in preventing any unwanted odours from emerging.

2. Avoid Excess Moisture When Storing

Excess moisture and dampness are the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. And unfortunately, certain storage areas in our homes are prone to dampness. Therefore, precautions should be taken when choosing a spot to store your footwear. Make use of moisture absorbers if required. Shoe trees and horns are a fantastic way to absorb moisture and keep the shape of your footwear.

Additionally, while it is best practice to avoid getting your footwear soaked in general, it is not always possible due to the weather. Therefore, after each use, carefully wipe them down and allow them to dry naturally, away from radiators or direct heat, before storing them.

3. Invest In Leather Protection

Although leather is renowned for its lasting quality, even the toughest of materials could use a little extra help.

This natural material could lose moisture over time, allowing it to become dull and eventually lead to cracks. For this reason, investing in good-quality wax and polish can assist in restoring moisture, enhancing appearance, and creating a barrier against dirt.

4. Rotate Between Footwear

Wearing the same footwear every day can greatly impact its lifespan.

When it comes to cleaning your footwear, the key is to allow them to fully dry before using them again. And, in winter, it can become quite tricky with just one pair.

Hence why having a few pairs to rotate between during the week is a great way to ensure longer wear. This will prevent the growth of mould and severe wear and tear.
